HWC|History

The Hawkeye Wrestling Club has been an important part of Iowa Wrestling for more than 30 years. Established in 1973 by Gary Kurdelmeier and Dan Gable, its primary focus was to aid individuals in their pursuit of World and Olympic Gold Medals.

By no coincidence, the Iowa wrestling team started its string of 25 Big Ten titles in 1974 and won its first Big Ten title in 1975. In 1976 Dan Gable began to oversee the Hawkeye Wrestling Club and in the ensuing 20 years the Hawkeye Wrestling Club had 13 Olympians of which 4 won gold medals. With the hire of Tom Brands as the head wrestling coach at the University of Iowa in 2006, the Hawkeye Wrestling Club would once again be brought into the forefront of importance to Iowa Wrestling.

The Hawkeye Wrestling Club is now embarking on a new chapter in its existence, with the goal of restoring it to its past glory. The new chapter includes a more aggressive approach to raising money to support the members of the Hawkeye Wrestling Club in travel, training and living needs. The Hawkeye Wrestling Club is also actively trying to get the best post-collegiate wrestlers to train and compete under the Hawkeye Wrestling Club umbrella. With your help, there is little doubt that the Hawkeye Wrestling Club will reach its goal of World and Olympic Gold Medals.
