Iowa City is buzzing with 30,000+ students back in town for the fall semester—and that includes all of our returning and new student-athletes! Navigating campus, juggling class schedules, expanding their social circles and, of course, sharpening their wrestling skills, it can take some time for everyone to find their groove. But once they settle in, the focus turns to St. Louis!
Tom Brands, Terry Brands, Ryan Morningstar and new assistant coach Jacob Warner are poised to push the envelope yet again this season. Coming off another top-four finish last year, Brands & Co. return six All-Americans; Nasir Bailey, Ryder Block, Gabe Arnold, Angelo Ferrari, Ben Kueter and transfer Ryan Crookham. With a roster this talented, the Hawkeyes will once again have their sights set on individual titles and making another run at the team championship.
Last month, Lester Bowling (77kg) represented the HWC & Team USA at the U20 Greco-Roman World Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia. Bowling opened the tournament against eventual champion Terteryan (ARM), dropping a hard-fought 5-0 decision. He bounced back in the repechage with a strong 9-4 victory over Ibrahim (EGY) before finishing his tournament against eventual bronze medalist Toplak (HUN), losing 1-1 on criteria. Bowling gained valuable international experience on the world stage and continues to build toward future opportunities at the senior ranks.
Austin DeSanto (61kg), Stephen Buchanan (97kg), Patrick Kennedy (79kg), Michael Caliendo (74kg), Dean Peterson (57kg), and Crew Howard (125kg) all competed at the Poland Open this past weekend in Warsaw. They are bringing back three medals!

We have two events coming up 1) Open Practice & Tailgate Party on Saturday, September 12th and 2) the HWC Sporting Clays Shoot on Saturday, October 10th in Riverside.
The first event is designed for our Inner Circle Members, as a way to say thank you, prior to the IOWA vs ISU football game. Practice will be held inside the Goschke Family Wrestling Training Center & Nicolls Family Wrestling Room starting at 12:30pm.
Following practice, we’ll head upstairs to the front of the Goschke for our tailgate party. You, along with other wrestling fans, will enjoy steak sandwiches grilled by the Muscatine Co. Cattlemen’s Association, games, and cold beverages prior to kickoff!
The next event is a fun opportunity to support the Athletes, Coaches, and Staff of the Hawkeye Wrestling Club while hitting an abundance of clays at one of the most scenic ranges in Eastern Iowa. This event gives shooters a unique and challenging day on the range, and allows you to compete with your friends while supporting a great cause.
