Happy New Year! As we head into the heart of wrestling season, our staff is energized and focused on preparing our athletes for an exciting second half and the start of B1G competition.
Coaches Tom and Terry Brands continue to inspire our team with messages that are authentic, passionate, and centered on growth. Last week, Terry reminded our athletes that true success comes from striving to be your best—on the mat, in the classroom, and in life. Whether you have an NIL deal or not, what matters most is your commitment and motivation to be great.
He shared a quote from legendary coach Chuck Noll that captured it perfectly: “The mercenaries will always beat the draftees, but the volunteers will crush them both.”
B1G season kicks off this Friday as our Hawkeyes host #32 Wisconsin at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. We then welcome defending NCAA champions and current #1, Penn State — Friday, January 16, for the Pioneer Showdown. Immediately following the dual we will host our 20th annual HWC Arctic Plunge fundraiser event at Brown Deer Golf Club.

Spencer Lee, Austin DeSanto, and Stephen Buchanan are preparing for their next opportunity to compete. There are two international tournaments coming up that should be on your radar; the Grand Prix de France Henri Deglane in France on January 17, and the UWW Rankings Series Tournament – Zagreb Open in Zagreb, Croatia on February 4.
And this weekend RAF05 in Miami, FL will be featuring Austin DeSanto, Stephen Buchanan and most recent HWC alumni, Pat Lugo. You can watch all of their matches LIVE on Fox Nation.
