This is an email that I didn’t want to write–ever. I’m sad to report that Coach Mike Duroe has passed away.
As many of you are aware Coach was diagnosed with Glioblastoma— a form of brain cancer last September–
I caught up with Coach Tom and Terry Brands— they both have a special bond with Coach Duroe here is what they had to say:
Coach Duroe had a spirit for adventure that was infectious. That energy went way beyond his coaching. He made boys into great men– Tom Brands
Coach Duroe brings out of his athletes a desire to wrestle their tails off for him and get better every day. He exudes confidence in his in his coaching that creates the desire in his athletes to want to destroy the opposition. For that, we say thank you. As a coach, I want to bring those same qualities out of every single one of our athletes–Terry Brands
There are not many people that are liked as well as Coach was– very difficult or almost impossible to hear anyone say anything but great things about the man. He has made a big impact on the Hawkeye Wrestling Club, the sport of wrestling and those that he surrounded himself with. Was rare to see him without a smile on his face.
I’m glad I got to share some time around him the last 10 Months– Mike was able to attend our HWC board mtg last month and had some great input.
Our deepest condolences go out to his family– he will be greatly missed.
Lastly, I remind myself and you— “Be like Mike!”
Continue to follow the HWC newsletter and social media for an announcement for a celebration of life later this fall.
Rest in Peace Coach Duroe
